Painters in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City has more than a hundred years of housing in it, and the paint job changes with the house. A 1905 Victorian in the Avenues, a 1930s Tudor in Yalecrest, a 1960s brick rambler on the East Bench and a new townhome off 400 West all need different prep, different products and a different kind of patience. We paint all of them, and we are based here.

Painting homes in Salt Lake City

The older homes east of State Street have lath and plaster walls, original wood trim under many layers of paint, tall ceilings and picture rails. They reward careful prep and punish shortcuts. Plaster cracks need to be cut out and taped, not just filled. Old trim needs to be sanded and primed before a new enamel will stick. The East Bench ramblers from the 1950s and 60s are a different animal: brick bodies with painted wood trim, soffits and fascia, where almost all of the exterior work is in the wood. Downtown and the west side have a wave of newer townhomes and condos where the job is usually a clean repaint over builder paint.

Exterior painting in Salt Lake City

Most Salt Lake City exterior work is wood: siding and trim on the historic homes, trim and fascia on the brick ones. Wood here peels on the south and west faces first because of the sun, and it rots at the bottoms of trim boards where sprinklers hit it. We scrape, sand, prime bare wood and replace failed caulk before paint. Homes in the Avenues and Capitol Hill sit in local historic districts with rules about exterior changes, and we will flag anything that needs a look before we start.

Interior painting in Salt Lake City

Inside, the common requests are plaster repair and skim coating, bringing dark or orange wood trim to a white enamel, popcorn ceiling removal in the mid-century homes, and whole-house repaints before a sale or after a purchase. We also do a lot of rental turnovers for owners with units near the University of Utah and in Liberty Wells.

What we do in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City painting questions

Do you paint historic homes in the Avenues and Capitol Hill?

Yes, and it is some of our favorite work. Original wood siding and trim need to be scraped, sanded and primed properly, and we take the time to do it. Both neighborhoods are local historic districts, so if your project involves anything beyond repainting existing surfaces, we will tell you what might need city approval.

My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?

Possibly. Homes from before 1978 may have lead paint under the newer layers. Tell us the age of the house when you call and we will talk through how prep is handled on older paint before we start.

Do you work with landlords near the University?

Yes. We do turnovers for owners with houses and units around the U, in Liberty Wells and in Central City, and we can usually work around a move-out date.

Do you give free estimates?

Yes. Joe comes out, looks at the job, and gives you a written price. No charge and no obligation.

How soon can you start in Salt Lake City?

It changes with the season. Call or text and we will give you a straight answer on the next open date.
